Abstract:
CS Optimization Feasibility Study in the Permian Basin
Joel Latchman
The energy industry is continuously seeking optimization and efficiency. Compressive Seismic (CS) is a technology that can ensure maximum value is obtained from seismic surveys by optimizing field effort, where costs are relatively high, and applying Compressive Seismic Reconstruction (CSR) in processing, where costs are substantially less.
We will present a feasibility study for the application of CS to a high trace density survey in the Permian Basin. CS is a flexible technique that can be customized to specific objectives. By examining the characteristics unique to Permian Basin acquisition such as distribution of project costs, source methods, and production bottlenecks, we design an appropriate CS geometry that would improve on current techniques while managing the inherent risk involved with acquiring a CS survey. This is followed by extensive survey design QC comparing a conventional design to the CS design both visually and statistically. We conclude with a thorough value analysis and recommendations.
